CURRICULUM ~ Southern Spice Dance Academy Programs

SPROUTS (Ages 3–4)

Our Sprouts program combines movement and music to help young dancers develop body awareness, rhythm, flexibility, coordination, creativity, and confidence. Students are introduced to basic ballet and dance vocabulary in a fun, nurturing environment that encourages a love of movement.

PRE-BALLET (Ages 5–6)

Pre-Ballet introduces young dancers to rhythm, coordination, creative movement, and the development of gross motor skills. Students learn beginning ballet positions, steps, terminology, and classroom etiquette while building a strong foundation for future dance training.

BALLET

The Ballet curriculum is designed to provide dancers with a strong technical foundation through repetitive movement, ballet vocabulary, musicality, discussion, and creative exploration. With an emphasis on proper technique, discipline, artistry, and personal growth, dancers train in a supportive and encouraging environment that builds confidence, strength, grace, and lifelong skills.

LEVELS

  • Ballet I (Ages 7–9)

  • Ballet II (Ages 9–12)

  • Ballet III (Ages 13 & Up)

PLACEMENT: Students are promoted according to their individual progress, technical proficiency, strength, and instructor evaluation rather than age alone.

COMPANY / COMPETITION TEAM

(By Audition and Director's Approval)

The Competition Team provides dedicated dancers with opportunities to perform, compete, attend conventions, and represent Southern Spice Dance Academy at regional and national events. Team members receive advanced training while developing teamwork, discipline, leadership, confidence, and professionalism.

POINTE (Ages 12 & Up)

The Pointe curriculum is designed to develop the strength, alignment, balance, and technical proficiency necessary to safely perform both classical and neoclassical ballet vocabulary en pointe. Pointe work is elegant, intricate, and challenging, requiring dedication and proper preparation.

Prerequisite: Director's approval and demonstrated strength, technique, and ballet training are required.

TAP (Ages 6 & Up)

Tap is a rhythmic and energetic dance style that transforms the feet into musical instruments. Students develop timing, coordination, musicality, precision, and performance skills while learning both traditional and contemporary tap techniques.

JAZZ (Ages 6 & Up)

Jazz is a fun, high-energy dance style that combines technique, flexibility, strength, and performance quality. Classes include stretching, turns, leaps, body isolations, across-the-floor progressions, and choreography while encouraging creativity, confidence, and personal expression.

LYRICAL / CONTEMPORARY (Ages 8 & Up)

This class blends ballet and jazz techniques with expressive movement to tell stories through dance. Dancers explore musicality, emotion, artistry, and improvisation while developing technical strength and fluid movement.

Prerequisite: Previous Ballet and Jazz training is recommended.

HIP HOP

Hip Hop is an energetic dance style inspired by today's street dance culture. Classes focus on rhythm, coordination, freestyle movement, musicality, and performance while encouraging confidence, individuality, and self-expression in a positive, age-appropriate atmosphere.

MUSICAL THEATRE (Ages 8–18)

Calling all triple threats! Musical Theatre combines singing, dancing, and acting into one exciting class. Students learn Broadway-style choreography, character development, stage presence, storytelling, and performance techniques while exploring the exciting world of musical theatre both onstage and behind the scenes.

CLASS PLACEMENT POLICY

Students are placed in classes according to age, experience, technical ability, maturity, and instructor recommendation. Southern Spice Dance Academy reserves the right to place or move students into the class that best supports their growth and success.
